The Craft

Prévaut designs in the Bauhaus tradition, where the shape of an object is decided by what it has to do and anything not doing work comes off. Applied to a building, that produces a clean wall. Applied to something worn on the body it asks a harder question, because the object arrives second. The hand, the wrist, the collar and the man were all there first.

So the work is not to make an object that holds attention. It is to make one that gives it back. A piece worn every day has to leave room for the life around it: skin, cuff, light, years. Dieter Rams, who ran design at Braun for four decades, wrote that an object made for a purpose should be neutral and restrained, so that it leaves room for the person using it. Neutral does not mean blank. It means the discipline of stepping back far enough that the man is the subject again.

That one decision settles the rest. Nothing is applied, so what is left is a small number of surfaces and the lines where they meet. Architects call the meeting of two planes an arris, and on a piece with nothing on it to look at instead, the arris carries most of the reading: the width of a plane, the angle between two of them, whether a face gives light back or holds on to it. On a Prévaut piece that edge is two millimeters across.

The bevel is where the decision shows. With nothing applied, the edge has to be exact. Exact is what takes the time.

Where a form gets settled

Prévaut designs in-house, on paper, before any gold is committed. The width of each plane, the angle where two of them meet and the finish each face will carry are not decided and then drawn. They are decided by drawing. You cannot tell whether a proportion is right until it is in front of you at size, so the sheet is where the thinking happens rather than where it gets recorded afterward. A form goes through several dozen sheets before it is released, and most of them are set aside rather than corrected. The differences between the last few come down to a tenth of a millimeter across the band. That last tenth has to settle several things at once: the angle of the facet, the proportion the band holds against every other dimension, how it feels against the skin, whether it slides under a cuff, and how it sits beside the rings already on the hand.

Reduction stops at a definite point, and the point is not taste. It is where nothing further can come away without the object losing its integrity, and finding it is most of the work.

What survives on almost every piece is the bevel, the shallow cut plane where two surfaces meet. It is on the rings, on the cuffs and on the pendants. Light crosses a bevel as a gradient instead of breaking on a corner, so the piece reads as quiet from across a room and exact in the hand. On a ring the bevel is taken to a high polish and the band between the bevels is left satin brushed. The edge throws the light and the face keeps it, which is why the ring changes as the hand moves and never settles into one flat gleam.

Where the gold comes from

Peter Zumthor, the Swiss architect who trained as a cabinetmaker before he trained as an architect, says his first idea for a building is always the material. It works the same way here. Every Prévaut piece is 18k gold, in yellow, rose or white, refined in Pforzheim from recycled metal rather than mined ore.

The refinery has produced carbon-neutral gold since 2022, the first to do it. A kilogram of its recycled fine gold carries about twenty-nine kilograms of carbon dioxide, measured by an externally verified life-cycle assessment, and what remains after that is offset. Mined gold, across the studies the refinery cites, runs between eleven and a half thousand and fifty-five thousand kilograms for the same kilogram of metal. The gap is a factor of four hundred to two thousand. Chain of custody is documented under the Responsible Jewellery Council standard, which means the metal can be followed back through the hands it passed through before it reached ours.

The diamonds have been worn before. They are bought back through the European estate market rather than ordered new, which is slower and less predictable than ordering new stones, and it is the reason color has to be matched by eye instead of off a grading sheet. The stones are laid out side by side and read against daylight rather than judged one at a time, and any stone that will not agree with its neighbors is set aside. On the pavé band that runs through the ring collection that comes to eighty-four cognac stones at 1.50 millimeters, each one in a seat cut for it, each held by a grain raised out of the band itself. Nothing is added to hold them on.

Two towns, and what they kept

Valenza has made jewelry since 1817, when a goldsmith named Francesco Caramora opened the first workshop anyone wrote down and registered the town's first hallmark eight years later. One in four registered businesses in Valenza today is a goldsmith's. There are seven hundred and five of them, most small enough to count as workshops rather than factories, and what the town held on to is high jewelry: gold work proper, made a piece at a time, with costume work at 1.6 percent of the total. Setting stones is the skill it kept above all others. Four out of five of the stone-setting firms in the province sit inside this one town, and that number has doubled in five years.

Pforzheim was handed its trade in 1767, when the Margrave of Baden licensed a watch manufactory inside the town orphanage and put the orphans to work in it. By 1913 there were five hundred and twenty jewelry and watch firms in a town of seventy-five thousand people, employing thirty-seven thousand of them. What Pforzheim has always been best at is chain.

A piece arrives as a rough casting and leaves as an object. Between the two it is cleaned, pre-ground, then tumbled for two hours so every surface arrives at the same evenness, then polished by hand, face by face, so that the setter receives a piece with a ground he can trust instead of one he has to correct.

The bracelet is where the hand shows most. It slips under a shirt cuff, sits soft against the skin, and after an hour you stop noticing it is there. It closes with one hand.

One surface holds the light, the other gives it back

Prévaut works in two finishes, and the difference between them is not dressy and casual. A polished face is a light source: it throws light back at the room. A brushed face is a light receiver: it takes light in and holds on to it. Neither one is the better half, and a piece carrying both changes as you move, because the two faces are never doing the same thing at the same time. Tadao Ando, the self-taught Osaka architect who built the Church of the Light, states the principle underneath it: light alone does not make light, and there must be darkness for light to become light.

The sculpted pendants are the clearest case. Each face takes a different finish, and the finish has to stop exactly at the edge with no bleed, so every face is masked off, worked alone, then unmasked and masked again for the next one. Six faces, six times. On a single pendant an hour goes into masking and unmasking alone, so that no face is touched while the one beside it is being worked, and another hour into the finishing by hand. If the hand slips at an edge the piece is begun again, because a finish that has crossed a line cannot be corrected, only removed. The sword pendant does the same thing along a curve, a single polished ridge running the length of a brushed body, and a curve is harder to stop on than an edge.

The chain is the same idea at a smaller scale. It is a diamond-cut cable chain, what the German trade calls a diamantierte Ankerkette: a facet is cut into each link so that it sits at a different angle from the metal around it. The facets go on last, after the chain is already linked and finished, so every cut is made on something that hangs and moves rather than on a blank held still. Each link meets a diamond-tipped tool turning at seven thousand revolutions a minute, which shaves off a layer a few hundredths of a millimeter thick, and that is the whole of it: enough metal to leave a flat plane where a curve was, and not enough to be put back. Every link is cut on its own, one after the next, the whole length of the chain.

What that leaves is a row of small flat mirrors, each one lying at its own angle. A curved polished surface spreads light into one soft gleam, and a flat one sends it back as a point, so at any moment a few of the facets are aimed at whoever is looking and the rest are dark. As you move, the lit ones go out and the ones beside them come up. The light travels along the chain instead of sitting still on it.

The last check on any piece is made by eye. Not by an instrument. By a person, at arm's length, for as long as it takes, and a piece that does not pass is begun again.
